The mere thought of cutting our own hair sends us into paroxysms of angst. We are worried that someone may know we did not visit a salon, spend the proper amount, and emerge sprayed and coiffed like a poodle (assuming that is what poodles endure). But I love the adventure of cutting my own hair just to a) buck the trend, b) discover what I will create, c) see if anyone will stare me down in complete and utter disgust, d) save a gob of money, e) save time and hassle, f) feel the satisfaction of DIY, g) see people’s eyes pop out of their heads if I tell them I did it myself, h) save the environment and my lungs in a small way, and i) see if anyone actually notices that they are not gazing upon the processed product of a professional. This is not to say that great stylists can’t make you look great. The good ones will leave you with touchable hair that flutters in the wind. I aim to make my head a work of art. Or, at least a mobile installation of some description. My point is that, as with so many other musts and pressures we as a society and individuals put upon ourselves, it can be a case of keeping up with the Joneses or “…dressed up for each other…”, as Van Morrison croons. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Cut your hair.

I love the idea of creating comedy on envelopes.
